Your guide to the best Instagram apps

To mark Instagram’s arrival onto Android, we’ve pulled together some of the best apps out there to enhance your experience of Instagram and access some pretty cool features, including news feeds and private messaging.

Instagram for Windows

Instagrille offers a unique way of accessing Instagram on your PC desktop. When you download the app, you can sync it with your Instagram account to get the full experience via Windows. However, you’re not currently able to upload photos from your desktop, which does take away from the experience a bit. A release for Mac is planned for early 2012.

Private Message on Instagram

instaDM was set up by Cristian Castillo to offer a unique private messaging experience on Instagram. Castillo felt the feature was missing from the app so he decided to build his own add-on. Initially launched as a web app, he later launched an iOS version following huge uptake in the service.

The app allows you to access your Instagram contacts and start private messages within the iPhone app.

Instagram on Mac

Carousel is a paid-for-app that offers a pretty cool way of viewing your Instagram photos. Again it works by syncing with your Instagram account, to offer a whole new viewing experience. Features of the app include multiple windows to view photos, the option to save photos to your Mac, vintage design and the ability to view photos by location:

Instagram Postcards

A nice app here that allows you to send a real-life postcard to someone with Instagram integration. Through the Postagram app, you simply snap your photo on Instagram, select the recipient and they’ll be sent the postcard in the post, along with a personalised message. A really nice way of taking Instagram from online to offline and making the most of the beautiful images:

Instagram Calendars

Another offline Instagram app here, this time allowing you to turn your Instagram snaps into a calendar. Calendagram works on the iPhone or iPad app (no details of an Android app announced yet), and the app allows you to create your calendar from your favourite Instagram photos, with delivery taking just a few days:

Instagram search

A really nice search engine for Instagram photos – Hashgram allows you to search by hashtag or username to access public Instagram content, even if you don’t have your own account. Each image brings up the username, number of ‘loves’ and upload details:
